The Three Most Common Bariatric Surgery Processes

Bariatric surgery is one of the most common forms of weight loss surgery that people get. This surgery is one that is used for helping to get people who are excessively obese to lose weight when other weight loss programs have not worked.

There are three bariatric surgery processes that are commonly used. These processes work in various different ways.

First there is gastric bypass surgery. This is the most common form of bariatric surgery that is used by many doctors who work in the field of weight loss surgery. A small pouch near the stomach will be created through stapling. This pouch will then connect to the small intestine. The upper area of that intestine will then be reattached to a new configuration so that he body will be able to redirect nutrients and other materials properly. This is used to help with reducing stomach size so that the user will not be able to gain weight as easily as one could. The safety of this type of surgery has made it a very popular option among these various different forms of surgery.

The second of these processes is the predominantly malabsorptive process. In this process the size of the stomach is significantly reduced. A part of the small intestine will be connected to a part of the stomach so that certain areas of the intestine will be bypassed. A major part of this bariatric surgery is that it works with creating malabsorption that keeps the body from being able to absorb certain nutrients. While this is a common process it should be noted that people who undergo this type of surgery will need to take high amounts of dietary supplements so that it will be easier to avoid certain medical conditions involving malnutrition.

The third of these options for weight loss surgery is the restrictive form of surgery. Vertical banded gastroplasty is the most common of these restrictive surgeries in that part of the stomach in the patient will be permanently stapled so that a smaller pouch is used as the new stomach in place of the old one. This is like the gastric bypass option but it does not work with the intestine. In many cases adjustable lap bands are used at the top of the stomach to help control the intensity of the surgery but there are concerns about band slippage to watch for.

These three options are important to consider among bariatric surgery processes. All of these processes work to help with getting the body to be able to lose weight through surgery. All of these will have different methods and in some cases different areas of the digestive system will be impacted along with the stomach.

While effective, surgery is last option - Tue, 24 Apr 2012 PST

Two bariatric-surgery studies published last month supported what many doctors and patients already knew: Weight-loss surgery works better than medicine alone to put type 2 diabetes in remission, or at least to lessen the need for medicine. But while the results weren’t shocking, the studies were unique in that they were randomized and controlled – the “holy grail of research,” said Dr. Mathew ...
