Bariatric Surgery and Eating

Eating after surgery is something to consider in that after a major surgery like bariatric surgery it can be difficult to get the body to consume food properly. The processes involving bariatric surgery and eating is important in that after this surgery it will be important to watch for the right processes involving eating after this surgery.

Immediately after the surgery takes place the patient who gets bariatric surgery will need to stick on a liquid diet for a period of time.

This diet should be one that deals with straight clear liquids without sugars. This part of eating after surgery will last until the gastrointestinal tract has recovered and it will be safe to operate. This time can vary based on the patient.

For about two weeks after this first step a sugar-free diet of blended or other smooth materials will be needed. Foods that can be consumed during this part of the diet after bariatric surgery include skimmed milk, cream soups and protein drinks. Avoid sugars in this part of the diet is important in that they can irritate the new stomach very easily.

During parts of bariatric surgery and eating that occur after these first two steps it will be important to look into using multivitamins on a regular basis. These multivitamins are needed because with nutrients not being able to be absorbed by the body as easily malnutrition can occur in many cases.

Another consideration to use for eating is that one's appetite will be substantially reduced. Usually one cup of solid food in a meal is the limit that a body can handle after a period of time. One will need to start with only a quarter of a cup before getting to this full level. With this in mind the person will not be able to eat as much at once as what one used to eat. Overeating can cause the smaller stomach to be filled easily and as a result vomiting can occur.

Also, a diet that is used after bariatric surgery should be one that is high in proteins. This is so that it will be easier for the digestive system to be able to work properly. There should be very low amounts of alcohol or carbohydrates in the body as well.

When looking into bariatric surgery and eating it will be important to take a few things into consideration. Immediately after the surgery one's diet will be substantially impacted. After this multivitamins will be needed and it will be important to watch for how much one is eating so that it will be easier to avoid common conditions like vomiting. By following these parts of eating after surgery it will be easier to help get bariatric surgery to be more effective and successful.
